Summary, etc. | Regional economic modeling can be an important tool in the efforts of States to demonstrate compliance with environmental requirements mandated under the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. This paper describes potential roles of regional economic modeling in forecasting regional air pollutant emissions and air quality. A description of the relationships between economic inputs, regional economic models, emission-source activity models, and air quality models is given, along with descriptions of a new emission-source activity projection system, the Economic Growth Analysis System (E-GAS), currently being developed for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The central portion of this paper contains a detailed demonstration of the application of regional economic models to the New England area, with interpretations of the data and general guidelines for use of regional economic models. This regional economic model simulation is generally parallel to simulations run by a core portion of the E-GAS model. |
