Meeting the challenges of policy-relevant science : bridging theory and practice

By: GRAFFY, Elisabeth A.
Material type: materialTypeLabelArticlePublisher: Hoboken : Wiley-Blackwell, nov./dez. 2008Public Administration Review - PAR 68, 6, p. 1087-1100Abstract: Ongoing debates over the role of science in policy making underscore the dilemma of effectively applying theory to practice. Assumptions about the science-policy nexus have direct implications for how this critical interface is managed. A useful lens is proposed ambitious effort to impove capacity for policy research relevance while protecting a commitment to sound, impartial scientific inquiry. This article describes and evaluates that capacity-building effort. It deepens our understanding of successful application of theoretical research to practice and advances our conceptual understanding of the science-policy nexus. This essay, furthermore, underscores the profund challenges facing administrative practitioners when using contemporary scientific research "on the job" and the pressing need for finding a better way to marry theory and practice.
