Retiring the old centurion : life after a career in policing - an exploratory study

By: RUIZ, Jim.
Contributor(s): MORROW, Erin.
Material type: materialTypeLabelArticlePublisher: Philadelphia : Routledge, 2005International Journal of Public Administration - IJPA 28, 13-14, p. 1151-1186Abstract: Research in policing usually begins with the application process and continues throughout the career. However, little research has been conducted on what happens to police officers after retirement. This part of a larger study begins with a review of the available literature on the general effects of retirement as it pertains to the general population in contrast to police officers. Findings indicate that retired police officers suffer higher levels of job-related health problems, depression, suicide, and employment issues. Longevity also appears to be shorter, but this is debatable.
