Nature and production might at first view seem fairly distinct, but a closer look reveals certain interesting analogies between these two meta systems. In this paper, we specifically look at the processes which determine progress by comparing the principles of quality improvement to the principles of biological evolution. We find an overarching principle behind the concept of quality which provides insights into the nature of quality, entails important lessons for companies, and explains the importance of striving for quality perfection. This might enrich a quality professionals' work with more meaning and a clearer sense of purpose, and embed the daily efforts of quality improvement into a broader perspective.
