Diversity creates global competitive advantage for South African Breweries

The Thunderbird International Business Review case study gives a detailed account of the history of South African Breweries (SAB) and its organization. It also explains about the composition of South Africa, the history of apartheid and its subsequent dismantling in the country plys the changing business environment. It foucsses on SAB's equity-employement plan and subsequent revisions. The case was prepared for use as classroom discussion at The American Graduate School of International Management. The People Management piece examines how the Halifax bank has widened the diversity of its workforce, focussing on the increasing proportion of employees who come from different racial backgrounds. It also talks about the twice-yearly "glass ceiling" event, aimed at confidence-building, at which aroud 60 women meet at the Halifax headquaters. The article is quite brief but accessible. The T&D article looks at how American companies are developing human resource management practices to encourage diversity at all levels, and draws on example of major US firms to illustrate effective approaches. There are also inset giving advice on developing effective diversity training programs, outlining how bias manifests itself in society, and emphasizing the need to stand against prejudice following the attack on the World Trade Center. The article provides a detailed but useful background to diversity training
