In this article on the nature and functioning of hope, we see, in a brief glimpse of some leading medieval ideas, hope as an element in a structure of intellectual or theological understanding and in the perennially current metaphor of the quest. In considering a small number of speculative novels, we see hope as a necessary dimension of fictional projections that represent utopian vision of fictional projections that represent utopian visions and the challenges to their implementation
