Patient safety : new directions in the management of health service quality

This article explores the impact of new 'patient safety' health policies within the National Health Service of England and Wales. With the growing evidence of clinical error and patient harm, 'patient safety' is now firmly established on the health policy agenda and leading to significant changes in the organisation and management of health services. The policy could represent a significant shift in the management of health service quality, as it establishes a new managerial discourse to inform organisational and occupational change, while the practical procedures for incident reporting and organisational learning represent enhanced forms of managerial surveillance of professional practice
