520 3 _aThe audio-visual sector in Europe is an important economic and cultural component of the single European market. It is, however, increasingly dependent on the American audio-visual industry. This process goes hand in hand with moves towards privatization and is based on purely commercial logic. It is necessary to resort to government regulations in order to reduce this dependence. There are two possible options: concerted European action, or the introduction of national policies to support the public service and to foster cooperation between the public television networks. The latter is certainly the more reliable one, provided the State does not seek to form extremely powerful multimedia groups pursuing multinational strategies
