The deum cristiano evangélico : 'the evangelical' in guatemalan politics - Stockholm : Institute of Latin Amercian Studies, Stockholm University, 2012

As the country with the largest percentage of Evangelical Christians in the Latin American region, Guatemala has had several experiences with 'evangélicos' in politics, most of whom have left office and positions with highly dubious legacies. Nevertheless, the last years have seen an increase in direct political participation by repreentatives of the Evangelical communitites, both by internal strategies and by invitation. In this article it will be suggested that in spite of the heterogeneous character of Guatemala's Evangelicals can be considered as one analytical category, defined as such both by official Evangelical representatives, as well as by other members of the political society. The article further examines the type and nature of the political cooperation and alliances entered as well as initiated by Evangelical representatives arguing that these indicate an endorsement of Guatemala's socio-political status quo.
