By: HUGHES, Adrian.
Contributor(s): HALSALL, David N.
Material type: materialTypeLabelArticlePublisher: Oxfordshire : Routledge, March 2002Total Quality Management 13, 2, p. 255-263Abstract: How the European Business Excellence Model was developed from the American Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award has been well reported. The Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award in turn drew its inspiration from the Japanese Deming Application Prize. This study investigates the use of self-assessment and the Business Excellence Model, as pplied to the UK financial services sector, and evaluates its effectiveness in helping companies remove the deadly diseases and obstacles identified by Deming. The general conclusion is drawn that there is no significant difference between companies who have a low, medium and high score from self-assessment when measured against Deming's 14 points for manaement and that the use of the Business Excellence Model may not by itself remove fundamental barriers for improvement
